How about a Smoothie?
Have you ever heard of Chesley Sullenberger? If you’re under 30, you’re forgiven. If you’re over 30 you might remember Sully, as he was called. Sullenberger was a decorated Air Force pilot who after his stint in the USAF, went on to a 40-year career as a commercial pilot flying people all over creation. Sully is what you call a “Smoothie”. Trained and tested. Certified on all types of souped-up aircraft. Fit for any situation. Sully was as solid as they come.
On January 15, 2009, Sully takes off from La Guardia. It was US Airline’s flight 1549 he was piloting. An Airbus A320 with 155 souls (that’s what the airlines call us) on board. The runway was cleared, landing gear up and they’re off without a hitch, up until the A320 hits a flock of geese. Then all hell breaks loose. The engines go silent. After Sully figures out went wrong he realizes there’s no way to get back to the runway. He decides to ditch the plane in the Hudson River. He alerted the tower he was landing in the river and to notify the first responders to be ready, and they were. Sully, through his smooth, ended up saving everyone on board. He departed the plane only after he was sure there was no one left on board.
What would a lesser pilot have done? No one knows. It was Sully in the hot seat. All155 souls on board that day will forever be thankful to the man at the helm.
To find out the rest of this story (and ditching the plane was just the beginning) check out the movie Sully starring Tom Hanks.
My point is this, you can get by without a Smoothie until you need one.
Not that many real estate deals crash. But you don’t want yours to be the one that does. You either have a Smoothie at the helm, or you don’t. So, whether your selling or buying, make sure you’re with the right pilot.
